The Center is saddened by the passing of Senator D The Center is saddened by the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein. At 90 years old, she was the longest-serving senator in California, the longest-serving female Senator, the first female mayor of San Francisco, and the oldest member of the Senate.

“Senator Feinstein shattered glass ceilings, all while championing LGBTQ+ rights—something I saw firsthand during my time at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, when I witnessed her leadership in the fight to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” said Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO @joe.hollendoner in a statement today.

Feinstein, who made history by being elected mayor of San Francisco after the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, had a long career in American politics. Among her legislative achievements are President Clinton’s ban on assault weapons (which expired in 2004), and the ban of certain torture mechanisms employed by the CIA in the wake of the September 11th attacks. She also encouraged Gov. Newsom to select Alex Padilla to fill Vice President Kamala Harris’ Senate seat when she decamped for the White House—a request he ultimately granted. The Advocate ranked her track record on LGBTQ+ issues as “positive, with some exceptions,” pointing to her opposition of DOMA and the recent Supreme Court ruling enshrining discrimination against LGBTQ+ Americans.

Senator Feinstein had previously announced her plans to retire at the end of this session after much concern and speculation over her health. She is survived by her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter.

“Queer people are told to minimize everything. W “Queer people are told to minimize everything. We’re told to be the friend or the supporting character. But drag makes us think, what if I’m the main character?” asked #TrixieMattel in her speech at last year’s #ModelsofPride, the world’s largest free conference for #LGBTQ+ youth. “I want you guys to know that you are all the main character.”

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race” champ accepted the event’s Model of Pride award, celebrating her epic career spanning entertainment, music, cosmetics—and even commercial renovation, with the hotel makeover series “Trixie Motel” for Discovery—at a time when drag was becoming a growing target for the far-right.

This year, the drag bans have evolved into an anti-LGBTQ assault on California schools, but Models of Pride is back on October 14th with keynote speakers like #DylanMulvaney and #HayleyKiyoko to create the safe, empowering space our students need right now. You can register at the #linkinbio, or head to modelsofpride.org for more info.
