Today, the Respect for Marriage Act got the votes

Today, the Respect for Marriage Act got the votes it needed in the House and is officially being sent to President Biden’s desk for his signature. This landmark moment for marriage equality means that same-sex marriages will be protected and recognized under federal law. However, it *doesn’t* mean that every single state in the Union must provide marriage certificates to gay couples. The back-and-forth with this bill is yet another reminder that marriage equality is not the be-all, end-all of LGBTQ+ liberation. The work continues.

BRITTNEY GRINER IS FREE. This morning, news outlets announced that Griner had been freed from imprisonment in Russia in a pre-negotiated prisoner swap. Brittney’s wife, Cherelle, was with @POTUS to hear the news herself (see slide two). President Biden confirmed that Brittney seemed in good spirits when he spoke with her, that she is safe, and that she’s en route back to the United States. We are grateful for her safe return, and send her loved ones our best wishes at this time as they continue to process and heal from such a traumatizing experience. 🎨 on opening image via @jtknoxroxs

It is disturbing—but not surprising—to see tha

It is disturbing—but not surprising—to see that hate crimes spiked by 23% in Los Angeles County in 2021. The County’s 2021 Hate Crime Report reveals that hate incidents and nonviolent hate crimes rose across the board, but also that the rate of violent incidents rose from 68% to 74%, marking the highest it’s been in nearly 20 years. These findings reflect our shift into an increasingly violent society, where extremist rhetoric and thinly veiled bigotry have become normalized in our culture, our pews, our politics, and—as this report shows—our streets. A statement from our CEO, @joe.hollendoner, on the tragic passing of Center employee Day Rodas. (Full statement below.)

We at the Los Angeles LGBT Center are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Day Rodas, our colleague and friend, and express our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. Day was a vital member of the Center, working within our Community Health Program, and she worked devotedly during her tenure to keep LGBTQ+ people educated, informed, and safe.

We are so proud of the work that Day did for the Center and our community. Shortly after joining our team, Day announced that she identified as a transgender woman. Her colleagues and family alike have expressed that Day seemed like she was beginning a new chapter—one where she could finally be her authentic self. To have her life cut short in this moment—and under such troubling circumstances—makes her loss all the more heartbreaking.

We cannot honor the life of Day Rodas without naming that violence against transgender people—particularly transgender women of color—is at an all-time high. Her passing comes shortly after Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we mourned at least 38 people in our community who we lost to acts of violence. We are witnessing a rise in anti-trans political rhetoric and cultural phobias that contribute to hate crimes against transgender people, many of which go unsolved. In the moments following Day’s passing last week, she was repeatedly misgendered by authorities and the local news media. We categorically condemn such carelessness, and we will do everything in our power to make sure these forces recognize our colleague as she deserves.

We commit to honoring Day’s life by continuing her work helping our community, and to ensure that transgender people are treated in our society with the dignity and justice that they deserve.
