LEVE by Laiza Graciela Fuhrmann Silva

Oil on canvas, 24”x36”: Through my art, I primarily aim to display a glorification of unconventional female forms — typically, using oil paints and clay. During the start of the pandemic, I experimented a bit with watercolor and line work to study life, form, and meditation.

I created Leve (Portuguese for weightless or light) after reading “at the dark end of the street…” by Danielle L. McGuire. In this past year, I have done a lot of thinking and research on the exploitation, and weight that black womxn have carried and continue to carry through their bodies. Generally, womxn are taught to take the least amount of space and are often shamed for how they navigate their bodies in this world. Additionally, this piece was directly inspired by a photograph of Lizzo taken by Erik Tanner. In her career, Lizzo has faced massive criticism for her confidence and expression of self and body, compared to the praise given to whiter and thinner womxn in the mainstream media. Ultimately, Leve explores the idea of weightlessness in regards to the societal conventions placed upon womxn- especially those with bigger and/or black bodies.

Opulence: Fetsayy 007 at the “We Are the Future and the Future is Fluid” Ball 2018 by Dustin Thierry

Photography: Dustin was born in Willemstad, Curaçao in 1985, and at age 14 he moved on his own to the Netherlands. His first project, Dreaming Above the Atlantic (2015-ongoing), is an intimate portrait series of people of Caribbean descent living in the Netherlands. Stemming from a personal craving to reconcile and reconnect with his own identity, the project grew into a much-needed exploration of the multiplicity of Caribbean experiences in Europe

His second project, Opulence (2013-ongoing), followed the suicide of his brother, a young polysexual man who dreamed of escaping Curaçao’s strictures and homophobia to follow Dustin to Europe. In his grief, Dustin began documenting the LGBTQ Ballroom scene across Europe. Through this, Dustin was imagining and experiencing the community his brother would have found if he had made it there, while finding a community for himself in the process.

Healing is at the heart of Dustin Thierry’s work. His projects stem from probing the internal questions he is asking of himself, as well as the external questions he asks of the world. In his approach, Dustin embodies the fact that portraiture itself is a relationship: his gaze is loving, and the result is restorative and generative for himself, his community, and society at large.

Grappling with its false allure of truth, I document the African diaspora in an effort to connect with my ancestors. Photography is a malleable medium, shaping the world through lenses and biases. History is manipulated, reconfigured to fit agendas. Their systematic extermination has been erased from history and silenced in classrooms. I remember them, I connect with them – so that we can begin to heal. I document the present. I remember the past. I imagine a utopian future. By connecting with my ancestors, I learn about myself.
